Texas History Timeline-Domino

Posting IN ORDER, post an event from the history of Texas.  

You will need to state:
1) Date (at least the year)
2) Name of event
3) Summarize the event (2-4 sentences in your own words).

Posts must be in chronological order or they will be removed.  Try to stay as close to the previous year as possible or we will run out of events. 

If you have any problems come and see me this week during tutoring.

**Spelling, capitalization, grammar and punctuation will count.  Any mistakes and your post will be removed.

    2)Pineda maps the coast of Texas
    3)Pineda maps the coast of Texas from the ship he was on with other Spanish explorers. This marks the first time that Texas enters recorded history.

    2. Cabeza de Vaca shipwrecked on Galveston Island.
    3. After a few hurricanes and fights with Native Americans, Cabeza de Vaca's ship and crew were shipwrecked on now-day Galveston Island. Only 15 people survived.

  3. 1540-1542

    Francisco Vasquez de Coronado lead a search for the seven cities of gold known as Cibola.

    For two years, he explored Texas trying to find Cibola. The search was not successful.

  4. 1.) February 18,1685
    2.) Robert Cavelier, Sieur de LaSalle established Fort St. Louis
    3.) LaSalle founded this fort making France's claim on Texas. Two years later, he was murdered by his own crew.

    2)Settling of San Antonio De Valero.
    3)Father Buenaventura An Martin Alarcon built the mission and then built the presidio across the river. They were given permission to build by the king of Spain.

    2) Royal order in Spain.
    3) In 1721 the Council of Indies introduced a royal order to the King of Spain. Its main purpose was to direct Texas authorities to stop all further hostilities towards the French.

    2) San Antonio de Bexar became the capital of Spanish Texas.
    3) San Antonio was originally a mission but eventually became a city and the capital of Texas. Instead of calling the city San Antonio de Bexar they called it San Antonio.

  15. 1)1779. 2)Spain Makes Changes. 3)In 1779 a group led by Gil Ybarbo went to East Texas and fund a community in Nacogdiches.The place became bigger , and became the second most prosperous town in Spainsh Texas.

    2) Gutierrez-Magee Expedition
    3) The expedition led 130 men to Texas to settle with the Spanish there who settled in the area. These groups of men were from France to stop Spanish settlement in Texas.

      2) Stephen F. Austin brought 300 families to Texas.
      3) Successful impresario, Stephen F. Austin, brought 300 Anglo families over to Texas in 1821. Those families soon became known as "The Old 300".

    2) Colonization of Stephen F. Austin
    3) Stephen F. Austin received a grant from the Mexican government and began colonization in the region of the Brazos River.

    2) Meir y Teran report.
    3)The Mexican government sent Meir y Teran to Nacogdoches. He found out that the Anglos outnumbered Mexicans at least 10-1.
    This was figured to be throughout Texas. He told the Mexican leaders that if they didn't do something Texas would become overrun with Anglos.

    2)Battle of Velasco

    2) 26 June 1832--The Battle of Velasco resulted in the first casualties in Texas' relations with Mexico. After several days of fighting, the Mexicans under Domingo de Ugartechea were forced to surrender for lack of ammunition.

    2) Texas becomes The Republic of Texas.
    3) Texas got independance from Mexico in 1836.The Texas Declaration of Independence was signed by members of the Convention of 1836. An ad interim government was formed for the newly created Republic of Texas.

      2)Treaties of Velasco
      3)Santa Anna only signed these treaties because he knew his life was in danger. He didn't sign them because he recognized Texas's independence or thier treaty.

      3) This battle was won and gained teas independence from Mexico. Without this battle, Mexico’s forces could have come together and defeat the Texas army

    3) The Republic of Texas was started in 1836 and coninued for nine years. The Republic of Texas fought for the freedom of Texas from Mexico.

    2)Compromise of 1850
    3)In a plan to settle boundary disputes and pay its' public debt, Texas relinquished about one-third of her territory in the Compromise of 1850, in exchange for $10,000,000 from the United States.

    2) Lone Star State Fair
    3) The first ever Lone Star State Fair was in Corpus Christi which symbolized a period of success in Texas during the 1850's. One of the organizers, Henry L. Kinney, persuaded Dr. Ashbel Smith to manage the fair.

    2) Great American Desert
    3) The U.S. military was moving shipments of supplies to Port Indianola. They moved 32 shipments of supplies on camel back through the "Great American Desert."

    2)Native Americans are attacked by U.S. army
    3)Army conducts 19 hostile actions against Natives, 15 by units of 2nd Cavalry, including a pursuit through Texas from Fort Clark to the Wichita Mountains in Native's Territory.

    2) Texas Secedes Union
    3) Texas decided to secede the Union. The Secession Convention voted a 171 to 6 vote to secede. Sam Houston did not want to secede.

      2) The confederacy pushes west.
      3) Advance units of the newly formed brigade of General H. Sibley marched westward from San Antonio to claim New Mexico and the American southwest for the Confederacy. The Confederacy wanted this land because it was free land.

    3) 40 suspected Unionists in Confederate Texas were hanged at Gainesville, in the October of 1862.The Great Hanging was a result of many years of building tensions.

    3) The Emancipation Proclomation was signed by Abraham Lincoln. This freed all slaves in the rebellious states.

    2) Ulysses S. Grant is appointed commander of the Union Army.
    3) Lincoln signed Ulysses Grant's commission to command the U.S. Army. Giving the future president the job of commanding the Union troops against the Confederate Army.

    2) The Thirteenth Amendment was passed
    3) All slaves in the U.S. were freed. Since communication methods were still primitive, few were aware that the Civil War ended two months earlier.

    2) 15th Ammendment was ratified.
    3) When this ammendment was passed it gave African Americans the right to vote. Women were still not yet allowed to vote.

    2) Texas was readmitted into the Union.
    3) The Union didn't readmit Texas for a long time. The Union was worried that Texas, being a slave state, would have slaves hidden and not let them go.

    2)Texas adopted the sixth constotution.
    3)The people in Texas voted 136,606 to 56,652. It also had some spanish and mexican influence.

    3) The planning and construction of Austin ended 7 years ago. Austin took up 3,000,000 acres of land in north Texas.

      2)James Hogg becomes the first governor of Texas that is a native of the state.

      3) He was one of our more successful governors. He's famous for creating the Texas Railroad Commission, and his daughter's name Ima Hogg.

    3)The Treaty of 1884 clarified where the border between Texas and Mexico ended. There was a previous Treaty, The Treaty of Guadelupe Hildalgo, but that treaty had failed to end the dispute over the border.

    2)The dedication of the present state capital in austin ended seven years of construction and planning.
    3)The building was funded with 3,000,000 of acres of land in north Texas.

      2.A giant hurricane came though Galveston and destroyed most of the city.
      3.Cause of this most people moved to Houston after the hurricane to get away from the city.

    2) Oil was discovered at Spindletop.
    3) Spindletop pumped 3.59 millions gallons of oil in its first year and 17.4 million gallons of oil in the following year. Spindletop is one of the biggest oil discoveries in the country at that time.

    2) Women won the right to vote
    3) The women had been trying to get the right tp vote for a long time. They finally won in 1918. That was definately an exciting time for women.

    3) After four years Texans finally get to come home from overseas.

    2. The flooding of San Antonio.
    3. In San Antonio a rainstorm arose on the 8th of September. Later that night almost 50 houses were swept away! The final death toll recorded was 224.
