Texans

Please pick a Texan of your choice that has had some kind of impact on our state.  You will need the following:

1) Full Name
2) Date of Birth
3) Date of Death (if they are deceased) 
4) A 3-4 sentence summary of why they were chosen (why you personally chose them) and what impact they had on our state.


If you can support your answer you should have no problems!

Spelling, grammar, capitalization and punctuation errors will be counted off in points if not corrected on your own before Friday.
Though we are not in school Friday, the due date is still the same.
Blog will close at 2:05 pm on Friday, May 24th.

    4) David Stern Crockett was a Texas hero. He fought a long hard battle at the Alamo and was captured by the Santa Anna soldiers. He was killed by the Santa Anna army and went down as a Texas hero at the Alamo.

  2. 1) James Walker Fannin
    2) Born on January 1, 1804 in Georgia.
    3) Died on March 27, 1836 in Texas.
    4) This guy commanded the troops at the battle of the Alamo. He died during the fight and he is a Texas hero for commanding the troops there so young and brave. I picked him because he is my favorite guy to learn this year and I admire him for his duty.

    4)Sam Houston was the first and fourth President of the Republic of Texas. As president, he wanted to make peace with Mexicans and Native Americans. After Texas got admitted to the U.S., he became governor of Texas.

    4. I choose George W. Bush because he was a former President of the USA. Before that, he was a Governor of Texas. George W. Bush impacted Texas in several ways but one of the ways was the "no child left behind" act(law).

    4)George Jones was a famous country singer and when he was young he was known as 'No Show Jones' because he would always ditch his concerts. When he got older(And more mature)he was the host of Texan radio station The Opossum 92.1. His impact on Texas was that he used to be a role model for people, not the best one, and when he died I was devastated because he was the only radio host that I always herd on 92.1.

  8. Miriam Amanda Wallace Ferguson
    June 13, 1875 – June 25, 1961
    Ma Ferguson was the first female governor of Texas, and I look up to her because she wouldn't stop fighting for equal rights. Ma fought to stop the racial discrimination of the Ku Klux Klan while trying to secure voting rights for women. Over all, she worked to make everyone feel equal in Texas.

    4) He brought so many people to Texas. Many of them were suffering from poverty in the United States. He was such an important impact on our history, by settling over 1200 families in Texas. He helped Texas grow as a whole & he is mostly referred to as the "Father of Texas" & that is why he was the important Texan I chose.

    4)He served the longest tenure in the nation's history as speaker of the US House of Representatives—17 years in three periods between 1940 and 1961.He was the states most famous legislative leader.

    2) Born August 9, 1809(South Carolina)

    3) Died March 6, 1836. (He was only 26 years old)

    4) William B. Travis is a very important part of Texas's independence. He died at the Alamo; where he was the top commander. He gave the Texans that were going to fight the choice to say or leave. He also wrote the Victory or Death letter which became a motto for the Texas Revolution. He later died fighting at the Alamo.

      4)An intern President of the Republic of Texas. I chose Burnet because he really did seem entrusting. David Burnet first entered Texas about 1815. Burnet's political career began with his election to the Convention of 1833. In 1806, he became the first American volunteer to join Francisco de Miranda in an unsuccessful expedition to free Venezuela from Spain.

    4) LBJ was a great Texan because he served in WWII and earned a silver medal. Later he became president after the assassination of JFK. In 1964 he signed the Civil Rights Act.

    2) Born: April 10, 1796
    3) Died: March 6, 1836
    4) I chose Jim because he put up a fight when the Mexican soldiers came in and tried to kill him. He was sick but he put up a major fight until his death. He was known for his knife that he always fought with and he led the troops at the battle of the Alamo until he got sick.

    4) Selena is a Tejano singer that was born in Lake Jackson Brazoria County Texas.
    She brought English and Latina music over to Texas, which brought people of different race together to listen to different kinds of music.Selena was murdered at the age of 23 in Corpus Christi, Texas. Even though Selena is gone, Latina and English pop music still lives on today.

    4)I choose Jordan because she made me feel that no matter were I come from I can achieve my goals. She also was the 1st African Amercan female to be a member of the senate.Then in 1968 she was ellected into the U.S. House of representatives

    2) He was born on October 14, 1890 in Dennison, Texas.
    3) He died on March 28, 1969.
    4) He was a great General who came up with the idea of island-hopping that helped win World War 2. After that he was promoted to a Five-Star General. He also served two terms as president. I picked him because I feel that he is a great leader.

    4) James S. Hogg was the governer of Texas in 1890. He also was in the Texas Railroad Commision. I picked him because he did a lot of public service and because I like his name.

    4. Ann Richards was a important governor of Texas and a great impact on the state.She increased the role of women and minorities in the Texas Government. She added African Americans and women to the Texas Rangers (a law enforcement agency), created the state lottery and improved the prison system. She was a Democrat and a Liberal.

    4) Pineda explored the Texas Coast. He also mapped the Texas Coast. Without him we wouldn't even have a Texas. So he was one of the most important people in Texas history.

    4) Juanita J. Craft was a maid at Adolphus Hotel. She fought against segregation by when she travles she sits in white only areas on the bus . She was one of the well known women of the civil rights movement.

    3) Died May 28, 1971.
    4) I choose Audie Murphy because I feel that being titled as the most decorated solider in Texas is a big deal. He lived in Farmersville, Texas and was awarded 33 awards including every U.S Medal for valor. He fought in World War II.

    4)Democratic politician from the state of Texas. He represented Texas's 20th congressional district from 1961 to 1999.

    3. Died: February 20, 1966
    4. Nimitz led the Allied forces to victory in the Pacific during World War II. On December 15, 1945, Nimitz was named commander-in-chief of the United States Fleet.

    4) Howard Hughes was a famous and strange pilot, billionaire, movie producer and entrepreneur. He was one of the richest men in the world. There was an airport named after him in Houston called the "Howard Hughes Airport" that is now called the Houston Municipal Airport. He later died in exile.

    4) I picked Richard King not only because he was not already used, but also because i think he was a very successful business man. He started a successful steam boat company and using money that he earned put together one of the biggest ranches in Texas, The King Ranch. The amount of livestock his ranch took to market help develop the cattle industry in Texas. I personally found it interesting that he was first apprenticed to a jeweler in New York but escaped as a stowaway to Mobile, Alabama.

    4) Joseph Glidden helped Texas by helping with the cattle drives. That was a big help, but also a no-no. The problem was that people were cutting the barbed wire to pass by the cattle drives.

  37. Juan Nepomuceno Seguin.

    October 27, 1806

    August 27, 1890

    Seguín entered the Alamo with the other Texan military when Antonio López de Santa Anna's army arrived, but was sent out as a courier. Upon reaching Gonzales he organized a company that functioned as the rear guard of Sam Houston's army, was the only Tejano unit to fight at the battle of San Jacinto, and afterward observed the Mexican army's retreat.

  38. 1) Jane Long 2) 1798-1880 3) Jane Long lost her father and mother when a child. Later, she got married with James Long, but was captured by mexican soldiers . Later, Jane opened a hotel, but became a social place for political activities. Jane Long was also known as the " Mother of Texas."

    4) He was a Dallas Cowboys quarterback 1961-1972. He won two superbowls with them. He is now in the Hall of Fame.

    4.Jesse Chisolm made an impact on Texas through the cattle industry. He created the Chisolm Trail,which many people used during the cattle trail age.This effected the economy at the time and has shaped the culture in Texas today.
