Important Confederate Figures

Using your textbook, class notes and the Internet (please limit Wikipedia use), list an important PERSON from the Confederacy.  Please cite their importance in the overall war as well as their importance specifically to the Confederacy.

You will need to summarize the information in your own words.  If you wish to post on someone else's person you will need to provide IMPORTANT information that was missing from their original post.  Please also feel free to ask questions about the persons posted.

***Remember that your posts can be removed if they are not satisfactory in nature.  Hopefully you all learned that posting early is in your best interest.

Also, be sure to RESEARCH your information before posting, as only factual information will be left on the blog.

*Capitalization, punctuation and spelling are still important.  You are on a public forum and are representing our class and school as well as yourselves.

Have fun with this topic.  Talk about important figures, but do not be afraid to do some research to see if your own family has any ties to such a person in history.

    1. Robert E. Lee was a confederate general who, in 1860, helped raise companies with volunteers for the war and named them "my texans" because he respected their military skills and courage. He was also involved in The Battle at Valverde, The Battle of Glorieta, and The Battle at Galveston. He also fought in the last battle of the Civil War where, as Lane said, he surrendered and signed the papers for the Union.

    3. Lauren,

Your information is somewhat correct but needs to be clarified. Lee did not raise and teach Hood's Texas Brigade, but nicknamed them when they came to Virginia. Also, double check your battle information.

  3. Not only was general Lee in the battle of Gettysburg, but he also won seven battles and lost three in the Civil War, including the battle of Appomattox. He was more than a general, too. Lee also had a background as a combat engineer in the U.S army. Despite his previous accomplishments, he was not able to beat the Union, and ended up surrendering to Ulysses S. Grant in 1865. If you have ever seen the Dukes of Hazzard, there is also a 1969 dodge charger r/t named after him!

  21. ATTENTION: The topic asked for important Confederate members and their specific importance during the Civil War.

While I appreciate your efforts, the topic did NOT ask for biographies of famous figures from history. I am currently going through posts and deleting those that do not fit the criteria. Please check to see if your post stayed and if not, be sure to put up an accurate post before 7th period ends tomorrow.

*Remember, they do not have to be famous. Branch out. Use the text book or the web to identify a historical figure and then find out what they did of importance in the Civil War.

I will be back in class tomorrow if you have any questions.

    1. Richard Dowling started off as a Jefferson Davis gaurd. He served in the Battle of Gavlveston before he became a Lieutenent. He used artillery, 44 men on the troops heading down the Sabine Pass. Important thing to know about him is that without him, the railroad that connected from Louisana to Texas would be blocked off, eliminating trade on the railroad to Louisiana.

He agreed with his state secession from the Union and hoped for a high military position in the new Confederacy. He guided the Confederacy as well as he could since it was in a pretty bad situation.
